Below is a history I whipped up for him. Some small things written to explain canon by me are noted with HC, for headcanon.
April 19, 1874 - Booker is born and abused as a kid by a father who is a drunkard and always angry. Finds himself loving violence and being good at it. (HC)
1886 - Now part of the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, Booker was at Wounded Knee, and committed atrocities there, ending up covered in blood and considered a hero by his men. Afterward, seeking absolution, he almost accepts a baptism and wipes away his sins this way, but decides that is no true way to wipe out a debt.
January 1, 1892 - Booker is signed up with the Pinkertons. a national detective and security agency. During this time he meets a woman and marries her. His violence in ending labor strikes ends his career.
October 1st, 1892 - His wife dies giving birth to a daughter, Anna. As a result, Booker becomes an alcoholic, and a bad gambler, but hires a nanny when he can.
Early 1993 - With what shreds of sanity he has left, Booker starts a detective agency to try to work off his debts, but bad luck only deepens his alcohol problem. (HC)
Mid 1993 - Depressed, and unsure what to do, Booker nearly kills himself, but realizes this would leave Anna to die by the time anyone knew she was alone. Unwilling to do that, but feeling utterly lost, his drinking becomes worse, as does his indebtedness.
October 1893 - Robert Lutece, representing Father Comstock, acquires Booker's Debts and comes to offer the constantly dead drunk man a way out, showing up at his apartment and apartment\office unannounced with a proposition; Sell his daughter to the wealthy and powerful man, and be free of his debts. Completely out of his mind, and temporarily possessed by his own future self(HC), Booker agrees and hands over Anna.
As soon as the man is gone(and his future self is gone), Booker changes his mind, realizing what he has done. He chases Robert and finds him in an alley, where once more he is possessed by his future self(HC). Robert is handing the baby over to Comstock. The two, with Rosalind Lutece's help, flee through a portal with Anna, and Booker loses her, seeing her pinky cut off in the doing. Left with little memory, but deep feelings of guilt, due to possession by his future self(HC) or drunkenness, he is sent even more into depression and drunkenness, and he brands himself with the letters “AD” on his right hand to always remember his daughter.
1899 - Booker is found by an old army friend and cleaned up, though he continues to drink some, he is put to work as America careens toward conflicts. He is given a temporary and experimental rank, that of Staff Sergeant, and leads a team who persecute the enemies of America with stunning violence, each time taking the chance of not coming home(HC). This is the beginning of Booker's sobering up, but his memories are so swiss-cheesed that most of the time he does not remember he even had a daughter. When he does remember, he goes on drinking binges.
Late 1912 - Comstock betrays Robert and Rosalind Lutece, and tries to kill them. The accident he rigs places them in a state of flux and neither alive nor dead. Together, they concoct a scheme to stop Comstock and help Elizabeth. They abduct Booker from his life through an interdimensional portal in order to use him as a tool to stop Comstock. Booker's mind, affected by the portal, rewrites history, wiping out his memory of what had gone before. Now not remembering selling his daughter, he thinks the Luteces, whose names he does not know, are sending him to find and bring an unknown woman named Elizabeth out of Columbia, and will pay him by wiping out his debts.
In Columbia, he discovers Father Comstock has made himself into a prophet, and is seen as a great leader and hero, and that Booker is seen as almost as bad as the Anti-Christ. Fighting his way across a city of fanatics, Booker kills his way to Elizabeth, frees her and tries to flee the city, but they are stopped time and again by distrust, violent citizens, and multiple crossings through universes.
A lot happens, and in the end, he destroys much of Columbia, and discover along the way that Comstock was really an alternate universe Booker, one who accepted the baptism after Wounded Knee and became a new man, one grounded in racism, hate, and insane levels of religious fervor. Obsessed with stopping Comstock from ever living, Booker chooses to die, and allows multiple Elizabeths from multiple timelines to drown him at the time and place of the baptism, somehow stopping Comstock from every having a chance to live.
Blacking out as he was drowned, supposedly dying, he thought all was over and he had at last paid for his sins.
October 1893, again - Booker woke up in his office where he was before it all began, and heard a noise from Anna's room and ran toward it.
Rushing in, he found her in her crib. Not knowing what to think, but remembering all of it, Booker vowed to make a better life for her. He cleans himself up and finds honest employment as a laborer, and a local nanny for Anna(HC).
December 25th, 1893/January 8th 2014 - Booker was drawn to Neptune with no memory of waking up again, dropped into a world where he was a famous video game character, and where, when his name and identity papers were seen, he was recognized. Found by the US government, he became one of the first of such 'Displaced Persons' to form the newly arrived in Neptune, and not remotely the last.
January - March, 2014 - Over those next few months, he settled in slowly, disturbed by nightmares, but functional, and became a private detective. He found out he was not so bad at it, solving several high profile cases.
April 1st, 2014 - his daughter, Elizabeth, arrived, and he began to try to repair their relationship.
April 2014 - He began to see a therapist who helped him work through the worst of his pain.
May 2014 - After becoming involved with Domino, another displaced person, and befriending her charge, he is drawn away from that world.
