Character In-Depth

Tell us about your character's history: After a childhood of abuse, Booker DeWitt joined the United Stated Army, and ended up in the Cavalry, learning that he was good at violence, and more, enjoyed it. Craving the good will and admiration of the other men, he found himself growing even more violent during the bloody massacre called the Wounded Knee Incident.

Labeled a hero for the atrocities he committed there, Booker realized he was sickened at himself. Not for being violent or quick to kill, or even for enjoying it, but for making it into a show, and turning violence into some sort of prove yourself thing. Fleeing the battle, he came upon a baptism, and chose to turn away, thinking he could not be purged of his wrongs by being dunked in water.

He went to New York, where he became a Pinkerton, and found a women who he fell in love with, and married. But both situations would end badly, as he was fired from the Pinkertons for violence and he lost his wife when she died in childbirth. Becoming a private investigator and losing himself in drunken gambling, Booker strove nonetheless to try to provide for his daughter, Anna, the best he could, but slowly realized he couldn't provide any kind of good life for her.

When a businessman came, representing Father Comstock and offered to give Anna a good life, and even to, in return, wipe out the debts Booker had wracked up gambling, he agreed. Regretting it, he chased after, but was only in time to scuffle with the man and his employer and then see them vanish into a portal, leaving behind a small piece of Anna's pinky.

Mindblown by what he had seen, Booker sank even more into drunkenness for most of the next twenty years, even branding himself with the letters “AD” on his right hand to always remember his daughter. He finally cleaned up, rejoined the Army, and fought at the Boxer rebellion.
